Men, you need hair conditioner

Men, you need hair conditioner

Many men go through life without ever buying men's hair conditioner, and for good reason. No one sits a man down when growing up and tells him why he even needs to buy it. Sure, we all know shampoo cleans your hair, but what exactly does a hair conditioner do for men?  Your hair’s outer layer is covered in microscopic cells that look like fish scales. These cells, when damaged, push out, causing hair to look rough and out of condition. Conditioners work by smoothing down the scales so your hair looks tame, soft, and healthy again. Hair conditioner is really just a fancy way of saying hair moisturizer.

Shampooing cleanses your hair, but also can strip it of some natural oils needed for hair health. Generally, cheap shampoos from the drug store will tremendously strip your hair of oils, while the best natural shampoos for men will not. Conditioners put those hair moisturizers back into the hair, allowing it to look shiny and healthy. All men’s hair types, from greasy to dry can benefit from conditioning.  There are many different types of men’s hair conditioners on the market, but in general, they all do the same thing. You only need to use hair conditioner 1 -3x a week, depending on your hair’s condition and length. Short hair, in general, only needs to be conditioned 1 – 2x a week. The reason is because the hair strand is short, it can receive ample nutrients from the scalp.

If you have short, curly hair, as is the case with many men of African descent, you should condition your hair after each shampoo. The reason is short, curly hair tends to be very brittle and needs extra nutrients to keep it healthy and tame.  Longer hair needs to be conditioned 2 – 3x a week, depending on length and hair health. The longer your hair is, the harder it is for nutrients to make it to the end of your hair tips from your scalp, causing a conditioner to be a necessity. Make sure you work the conditioner into your hair really well. If your hair is more oily, you can get away with conditioning only the tips.

The best men’s hair conditioners will also have highly moisturizing natural ingredients such as aloe and vitamin E. You’ll also want your men’s hair conditioner to have a scalp stimulating ingredient such as tea tree and peppermint oil. These ingredients stimulate the scalp, supporting hair growth and minimizing dandruff.  How does a man condition his hair? Easy. After shampooing your hair with a natural shampoo for men, grab your men’s conditioner and put a big dab of it in your hair. Gently glide the conditioner over your hair, making sure to gently work it especially into your hair tip’s if you have longer hair. There’s no need to let it sit on your hair for a few minutes, once you’ve applied it, simply rinse it out of your hair.

It will take a few weeks, but once you start working a men’s hair conditioner into your men's hair care routine, you’ll start to notice fuller, more healthy looking hair.
